Types of interpreting

Consecutive interpreting: The interpreter conveys the speaker’s message after the speaker pauses, typically every 2–3 sentences. This standard pause allows the interpreter to capture the full message accurately while keeping the conversation flowing naturally. This mode is ideal for one-on-one meetings, medical appointments, physical and occupational therapy sessions, immigration interviews, school meetings, and group interactions where every participant requires interpretation.

Simultaneous interpreting: The interpreter translates in real time without the speaker pausing, providing a seamless experience for the audience. This format is best suited for conferences, lectures, large meetings where not all participants require interpretation, webinars, and virtual events. Simultaneous interpreting typically requires the use of headsets, transmitters, or dedicated audio channels. For events lasting 1.5 hours or longer, two interpreters are required to ensure consistent quality and high performance throughout the session.
