Testimonials

"From Tasmania we moved to Chapel Hill, NC and we’ve been here for almost 13 years. About 3 years ago I walked by CHICLE and decided to try Spanish. Then I tried Sgaw Karen which I thoroughly enjoyed!  I use Karen with ESL tours at the Ackland. (I’m a docent – doing tours in English!) I’m currently taking German and we have a wonderful and very patient teacher, quite unlike the mean one who gave me 25% in 7th grade." Riëtta Couper

Tim Williams has been in Bernard Luscans' advanced French conversation class for six years now. A (mostly) retired social worker, originally from England, Tim is also a volunteer gallery teacher at the Ackland Art Museum. He learned to speak French in the mid-1960's, as a peace corps-type volunteer in Algeria. A few years ago he became co-owner, with family members, of a house in a charming little town in Languedoc, in south west France. He visits there every summer and keeps up his French between visits in this CHICLE class. "The class is terrific," Tim says.   "Bernard is not only a great teacher, he's also a historian, cultural commentator - and comedian! So we have a very good time while brushing up our French. C'est si  bon!"

"Hi! I am the School Social Worker at Carrboro Elementary School. I have a wonderful job because every day I get to help children and families. I am learning Spanish and Karen at CHICLE. I took advantage of several opportunities to begin learning the Spanish language, but only learned enough to be confusing! CHICLE has helped me feel more comfortable in talking to families and has increased both vocabulary and improved my grammar. Last year, I became more involved in another growing, non-English speaking community at CES-refugees from Burma. I began taking Karen language classes at CHICLE. CHICLE has enabled me to both begin learning a vocabulary I can use with the families, and to be respectful of common elements of the Karen culture while helping the families. In January, I will be taking both Spanish and Karen on the same day! I'm a little nervous and very excited!" Kerry Sherrill
